Abstract

The word semiotics comes from the Greek root seme (sēmeiōtikos), meaning interpreter of signs. When we talk about signs in film, we're referring to any element that communicates something. A withered rose can convey loss; a low-angle shot can make a character feel more powerful; a close-up brings us closer to their emotions. These interpretations depend as much on our own experiences as on the cultural codes we share.
